A shifting took place in Colombia located in the northwest corner of South America, on Sunday, May 4, 1958; the 241stday of the year. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was serving as America's 34th President of the USA.
Meanwhile on 606 Harter Street, Marlin Texas, the Rogers household preparation had been in full effect and were about to come to fruition as the family prepared for the birth and arrival of their 7th child.
Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Bernice Rogers (Rickey’s parents) welcomed a beautiful, brown skin little boy. They decided to name their baby boy and bundle of joy, Rickey. We are not sure if his parents knew that his name meant “brave powerful leader” “peaceful ruler” “Kind and loved.” At the time of Rickey’s birth, there were already six other little Rogers’ Ready to assist their parents in neutering, loving, caring, and showing Rickey the Rogers household of rules. The Rogers’s family of siblings had a total of six boys and four girls. Rickey loved his parents and often verbalized that he was never going to leave them, stating “I’m going to take care of Babe and Eddie.” And he did exactly what he said.
Rickey attended school in Marlin, Texas. He received his childhood education at Booker T. Washington elementary school. He graduated from Marlin High in Marlin, Texas. Rickey accepted Christ at an early age.
Rickey had a kind, charismatic, and giving spirit. Rickey poured more into others than he kept for himself. He was the type of person who would give you the shirt off his back, even if he did not have a thing. He was truly a selfless person. Rickey was a devoted humble son, brother, and friend. He helped his parents take care of his special needs brother, Ronnie. Rickey would light up any room with his charm and great since of humor. He was witty and never had a loss for words. Rickey enjoyed walking in the neighborhood. He would get up early every morning and walk to the Texaco gas station to fellowship with friends and have a cup of coffee. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Rickey’s family and friends knew that he was faithful, and his love was unending.
He leaves to mourn four brothers: Eddie Earl Rogers (Lela Mae) of Leander TX, Stevie F. Rogers (Phyllis) of Denver Colorado, Ronnie Rogers, and Kevin Rogers of Marlin TX; four sisters: Bobbie Jo Moore (Lonnie) of Springfield Missouri, Bettie Ann (Pastor Glenn) Davis of Houston TX, Doris Lawrence Marlin TX, Vickey Mitchell (Wayne) of Arlington TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rickey was preceded in death by his parents Eddie and Bernice Rogers, maternal grandparents Travis and Sally Price; paternal grandparents Jim and Queen Rogers; brothers James & Joseph Rogers; brother-in-law Chester Lawrence; nephews Malcolm X Moore, Carman Latchie and Derick Rogers; great niece Genesis Jackson.
Rickey’s departure has left an irreplaceable void. His impact on everyone he encountered was profound, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts. The depth of his influence is a testament to the love and respect he garnished from all who knew him.
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearance. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 KJV
